St. Augustine Chiropractor Discusses Different Types of Headaches

Almost everyone experiences a headache from time to time, but not every headache is the same. Headaches can range from a mild annoyance to severe pain that makes normal activities difficult. Understanding the characteristics of different headache types can help you recognize patterns and determine when professional evaluation may be appropriate.

Some headaches are associated with muscle tension or other musculoskeletal factors, while others are neurological conditions that may require medical management. Here are three common headache types to know about.

Tension Headaches in St. Augustine, FL

Tension-type headaches are among the most common types of headaches. They typically cause a pressing, tightening, or band-like sensation rather than the throbbing pain often associated with migraine.

The discomfort may occur on both sides of the head and is generally mild to moderate in intensity. Tension headaches can last anywhere from about 30 minutes to several days.

Some people notice tenderness or tightness in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, or scalp. Stress, poor sleep, prolonged screen time, and maintaining one position for extended periods may contribute to headache symptoms in some individuals.

Because neck and upper-body discomfort can sometimes accompany tension-type headaches, an evaluation of posture, movement, and musculoskeletal factors may be appropriate for certain patients.

Migraine Headaches

Migraine is more than simply a severe headache. It is a neurological condition that can cause recurring attacks of moderate to severe head pain along with other symptoms.

Migraine pain is often throbbing or pulsating and may occur on one side of the head, although it can affect both sides. Nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound are also common. Physical activity may make symptoms worse.

Some people experience migraine with aura. An aura can cause temporary visual disturbances, such as flashing lights or blind spots, or other sensory or neurological symptoms before or during an attack.

Migraine triggers vary from person to person. Changes in sleep, dehydration, skipped meals, stress, certain foods, hormonal changes, and environmental factors are among the potential triggers.

People experiencing frequent or disruptive migraines should discuss their symptoms with an appropriate healthcare professional to determine an effective management strategy.

Cluster Headaches

Cluster headaches are less common than tension headaches and migraines, but they can cause extremely severe pain. The pain is typically concentrated around or behind one eye and usually occurs on one side of the head.

Unlike many other headache disorders, cluster headaches tend to occur in groups or “clusters.” An individual attack commonly lasts between about 15 minutes and three hours, and attacks can occur repeatedly during a day.

Symptoms on the affected side may include a watery or red eye, a runny or congested nose, facial sweating, or eyelid changes. People experiencing a cluster headache may also feel unusually restless rather than wanting to lie still.

Because cluster headaches can be intensely painful and require specific medical treatment, anyone experiencing symptoms consistent with this condition should seek an appropriate medical evaluation.

When Should You Seek Help for a Headache?

Most headaches are not caused by a dangerous condition, but certain symptoms warrant prompt medical attention.

Seek urgent medical care for a headache that is sudden and extremely severe, particularly if it reaches maximum intensity within seconds or minutes. Medical evaluation is also important when a headache is accompanied by new weakness, numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, loss of consciousness, vision changes, fever with a stiff neck, or follows a significant head injury.

New or substantially different headaches should also be discussed with a healthcare professional, particularly when they become frequent or progressively worse.

How Chiropractic Care May Fit Into Headache Management

For some people, headaches occur alongside neck pain, muscle tension, restricted movement, or other musculoskeletal concerns. In these situations, a chiropractor may evaluate the neck, upper back, posture, and movement patterns to determine whether conservative musculoskeletal care may be appropriate.

Depending on the individual, treatment may include chiropractic adjustments, manual therapy, mobility exercises, stretching, strengthening, and recommendations for improving posture or daily movement habits.

Chiropractic care is not appropriate for every type of headache, and it should not replace medical evaluation when symptoms suggest an underlying neurological or other medical condition.

At CHIRO + LASER Saint Augustine, our team can discuss your symptoms and determine whether a chiropractic evaluation may be appropriate. If your symptoms require medical evaluation beyond the scope of chiropractic care, appropriate referral is an important part of responsible patient care.
